If you work in a high-risk area; you may have come to learn to live with the idea that you can get injured at any time. While this does not go away, there are things we can do to keep it from happening all the time, and our work not to stop. There are of course cases where we must accept the risk. But it is important to know up to what point are these risks acceptable.
Risk is measured through its frequency, the probability of it occurring, and how severe an injury it shall cause. For a risk to be accepted, the management level of an organization have to be on board. The task of controlling risk falls on management. Their job gives them access to the right tools to keep risk at their lowest. They have for maintaining a job safety analysis tool.
Since they are directly affected, those on the ground need to do their best to keep these risks minimal. It is only sensible that those how shall be part of a given project are told of their imminent appointment. They also need to be aware of all dangers they might face, and how best they are to be prepared for them.
Those on the ground also tend to see most of the risks, even if they do not report them. This information needs to be captured, to develop ways of minimizing it. People need to understand what the acceptable levels of risk are, and what levels are beyond this. For this to happen, the organizing level needs to have all the details of the work environment, and the health and safety hazards in it.
There are no two people who can look at risks the same way. While it may seem too dangerous to one, another person may find it a normal site. Therefore, communicating the presence of risk becomes complicated. The JSA tools shall make the communication and documentation of the risks easier for everyone. This also makes it easy for those working here to know of the risk and control in place while working.
This tool is used to reduce the level of risk to its lowest point. It involves all those participating in the project to interact and have the same understanding of the job at hand, the procedures involved, and the hazards likely to be faced as the job goes on. It needs to be implemented in full if its benefits are to be realized. Only then will they share quality and relevant information. The employees need to feel valued when they share their opinions, for them to be willing to share this information.
